Does cold email still work?
Yes — boring cold email is what died. Decision-makers still live in their inboxes, and businesses still book real appointments there. What changed is the standard: inbox providers now enforce sender authentication and punish spam complaints, so lazy blast-everyone outreach gets filtered before anyone sees it. The channel didn't die; the bar got higher.
What earns the inbox now
- Technical legitimacy. Authenticated sending, valid records, warmed addresses on separate sending domains — the plumbing that keeps good mail out of the spam folder, done before the first message goes out.
- Research before writing. Outreach that names something true about the recipient's business, not a template with a first-name token.
- Disciplined follow-up. Most replies come after the first message — on time, with something new to say, never a bare "bumping this."
- Volume with restraint. The goal is conversations with the right people, not the biggest possible list. Complaint rates are now a sender's reputation.
What it gets you
Conversations with people who weren't looking for you yet — the one channel where you choose exactly who hears from you, at a cost that scales with effort rather than ad budget.
What it doesn't do
Cold email can't make an unwanted offer wanted. If the message wouldn't earn a reply sent one-to-one by a human, sending more of it faster just burns the domain. Quality of the list and the offer come first.
